Neonatology refers to the medical care of newborn infants, especially ill or premature newborn infants. Typically it is considered a hospital-based specialty, as most often these babies are in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs). However, our providers perform rounds at the local hospitals daily and we have a specialist for managing those tiny patients that are too small or ill to go home with the family after birth.
The principal patients of neonatologists are newborn infants who are ill or requiring special medical care due to:
- Low birth weight
- Intrauterine growth retardation
- Congenital malformations (birth defects)
- Pulmonary hyperplasia
- Birth asphyxias
