Neonatology refers to the medical care of newborn infants, especially ill or premature newborn infants. Typically it is considered a hospital-based specialty, as most often these babies are in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs). Our specialists work closely with the hospital staff and then will follow those infants post discharge.
The principal patients of neonatologists are newborn infants who are ill or requiring special medical care due to:
- Low birth weight
- Intrauterine growth retardation
- Congenital malformations (birth defects)
- Congenital lung or cardiac disorders
- Birth asphyxias
